The Secret Room…

Have you ever had that dream where you discover a secret room in your house – one that’s always been there, but you never knew about it?  That dream came true for Matthew today!

We have a finished basement that we rarely use.  There are a few reasons why we don’t use it much.  I won’t get into the reasons because they’re way too stupid to even discuss.  B asked me this weekend to please remove one of the reasons (a litter box in the main living room) so that Matthew can run around and enjoy it.

So I did.

Matthew and I spent a couple hours in the basement today and it was like a whole new house for him.  He was running around like crazy – squealing and chattering the entire time.  He would turn corners and scream with delight!  It was super fun watching him!  I grabbed my phone to take a bunch of pictures for B.  This post is really for him so he can see how much fun Matthew had per his wonderful suggestion  🙂

Hi, there, I’m Courtney. I never planned to stay home with my kids, but I got sucked into motherhood when my first baby came into our lives after years of infertility and multiple rounds of IVF. His brother followed closely behind, something we didn’t plan on after having such a rough road with achieving parenthood the first time around. My boys are IVF cycle twins, conceived on the same day but born two years and one day apart (they were both transferred on the same day in October, but with two years between them). My boys are the best of friends and my husband is a terrific husband, father, and most importantly… friend. He fully supported my desire to stay home (“I just wanted it to be your idea and not mine, I totally want you to stay home and raise our kids!”) and encourages me in everything I do. I am a lover of projects, spreadsheets, fitness, healthy cooking and eating, crafts, selling my stuff on FB (HA!), and the outdoors. If I’m active, I’m pretty darn happy!

  1. So cute! But I always want my secret room to be hiding behind a built in book shelf or something exotic and all haunted house movie -esque. 🙂

    • Oh, I totally agree! In my dreams, it’s always under the basement, or a special staircase above the attic. Growing up, we had friends who lived in a house with a secret staircase behind the kitchen and it was so cool, even if we weren’t allowed to use it!

  2. Oh this makes me so jealous!!!!! We are so quickly out growing our house. I want so badly for a basement and extra space…..there’s one room for all of us and Raegan has already searched every nook and cranny of that room….My husband and I have a running joke about when we build our dream house Mount E we can have things like secret rooms….ohhhh some day!

Love the pics…..so cute and exciting for him!

  3. Glad to see photos of this adventure!

  4. How fun!! That’s more than a secret room! What an awesome new play space for Matthew! (Dude, and an awesomely stocked bar!!)

  5. That looks like an awesome space for him to run around in! I feel the same way about our finished basement being a secret room to Chloe right now. It’s not nearly as big as yours, it’s an odd long, skinny room, but it will be her playroom eventually. We just have to clear all the boxes out of it first.

  6. Um, can I just come live in your “secret room?” Dude, I don’t know what your “stupid” reasons are for not using it, but I can ignore any of them, guaranteed. Pretty please can I move in? A theater room, a stocked wet bar, and tons of room for Stella to roam. I’m sold!

(PS – love the pics of Matthew – he looks SO stoked!)

  7. Wow- I am jealous too (we don’t have basements here)- it looks so nice and so much fun for Matthew! Hope you can enjoy it more often now!

    • Oh girls, don’t be jealous. It is nice, but I’d rather have storage space. I know I’ll change my mind on that one day, but storage space (of which we have none) would be soooo nice. But Matthew digs his new space, and that’s all that matters.

  8. Oh my goodness, how fun! I want to come and play!

  9. YES!!!! I have that dream ALL THE TIME!!!!

Our basement was invaded by black water in the spring (Yes, what you think it is.) The clean-up happened that day but it is utterly destroyed. We’re still in the bidding process with contractors. I am full-on jealous! Congrats 🙂

    • I remember when that happened to your basement. That is terrible. It is a reason to not have a basement (or a finished one, anyway). HA! B’s first house was OLD but super charming, but every time it rained, we’d lay in bed at my townhouse, worried that his basement was flooding. Selling that basement (house) relieved a ton of stress for us 😉

Good luck with your basement. I know from very limited experience how stressful that can be.
