Damned teeth coming in! I had Matthew in a headlock this morning for the first time ever to get his teeth brushed. Brushing twice a day is NOT optional in this house! He usually opens up with no hesitation, but his gums are sore. Once the headlock portion was done, he took his toothbrush and brushed willingly. he brushed, and brushed, and brushed! He got mad when I took it away! He’s becoming so independent!

Hi, there, I’m Courtney. I never planned to stay home with my kids, but I got sucked into motherhood when my first baby came into our lives after years of infertility and multiple rounds of IVF. His brother followed closely behind, something we didn’t plan on after having such a rough road with achieving parenthood the first time around. My boys are IVF cycle twins, conceived on the same day but born two years and one day apart (they were both transferred on the same day in October, but with two years between them). My boys are the best of friends and my husband is a terrific husband, father, and most importantly… friend. He fully supported my desire to stay home (“I just wanted it to be your idea and not mine, I totally want you to stay home and raise our kids!”) and encourages me in everything I do.
I am a lover of projects, spreadsheets, fitness, healthy cooking and eating, crafts, selling my stuff on FB (HA!), and the outdoors. If I’m active, I’m pretty darn happy!

Hey Courtney, I’m a dentist. It will be much easier for you and M if you brush his teeth while he is lying on the bed/sofa and you approach his mouth from above his head. Just make sure he doesn’t swallow much of the foam if you are using a fluoride toothpaste. 🙂 This technique is much easier than trying to brush his teeth with you facing him.

Thank you, Nikki! If there was a “best comment award,” this one would win it! I have many readers who will appreciate this! We are trying this tonight!

I am going to try this tonight. I HATE that we have to hold HGB in a headlock to brush his teeth…so BJB just doesn’t and now there is clearly tartar build up around his gums. GAH.
He always wants to brush his teeth, but really just chews on his toothbrush. I hate that we have to force him to do it… don’t want to traumatize him and make him trust us less. The screamfest SUCKS.

He does look like such a big boy here brushing his teeth!! 🙂 Alidia has been good about letting us brush hers so far but already prefers the end when I let her take the brush herself, although she mostly just chews on it now. Still good to get her started early though 🙂
Great to read hopefulandhungry’s tip above. Thanks for sharing. We will try that too! 🙂

Miss E LOVES having her teeth brushed, which is odd since she hates anything being put in her mouth. But I’ll take it! Matthew looks like such a big boy in this picture! Awwww.

I’ve always said Raegan is a “ME DO” kind of girl. She wants to do everything herself. So I’ve learned to bargain. She can do it when I’m done…But I think I might just try this new approach and maybe it won’t take forever….Thanks to Nikki for sharing!

omg, this just reminded me how horrendously horribly terrible we have been at brushing their teeth lately. Damn. Getting back on the tooth brushing train TONIGHT! PS I love his PJs!!
